“I have had hearing loss for 47 of my 53 years and have worn aids most of my life. I went to see Dr. King in order to have a current audiogram in order to apply for SS disability. My loss is profound. I walked in her door with no real hope after having accepted another doctors diagnosis that only cochlear implants would help several years prior. I walked out of her office with tentative hope. She didn’t make any false promises. She did talk to me about cochlear implants but once I told her that was not something I wanted to pursue, she respected my answer and talked to me about the highest powered aids they offer. She encouraged me to try them with the ability to send them back and be refunded. She was honest with me about my loss and the limitations that I face. So I went into this basically just thinking that I would maybe have powerful aids that could alert me to sounds. Well…. The day I got turned “on” was one I will never ever forget! I could hear. I’ve never known that refrigerators hum, or that toilets are extremely loud. I’ve never heard music in a restaurant before. I haven’t talked on a phone in probably 10 years but recently carried a legit conversation with both my husband and son. I didn’t know my dog whined. I had no idea that trees and birds made beautiful noises. I love the Bluetooth live streaming with my TV. I’ve bought my first Apple Music subscription. Even the cicadas are music to me. The only way I can describe it is as hearing in COLOR. I walked in defeated, and thinking my working days were vastly coming to an end. Not now! I don’t want to draw SS when I have the ability to work and enjoy my life HEARING and among my friends and family. I’m only 2 weeks in and have already torn those application papers up, climbed out of the Petri dish of despair, anxiety, and a little depression. It’s time to LIVE! In COLOR!
