Catherine Fabian,
AuD

Pediatric and Neuro Audiologist

Dr. Catherine Fabian earned her Doctorate in Audiology from Northwestern University in 2008, following undergraduate studies in cognitive science and linguistics at UC San Diego. Affectionately known as “Dr. Cat” by her younger patients, she specializes in pediatric audiology, Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) evaluations, auditory training, and hearing aid rehabilitation. She is widely recognized for her thorough, individualized assessments and care plans, which are grounded in advocacy and tailored to maximize each patient’s access to communication, technology, and social engagement.

Her clinical expertise includes CAPD across the lifespan, noise-induced hearing loss, and tinnitus. Dr. Fabian’s doctoral research focused on the neural processing of music in the brain—a passion she continues to integrate into her work by supporting the hearing health of musicians and music lovers alike.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Fabian has served in diverse settings: as an educational audiologist in public schools developing CAPD programs; in private practice fitting hearing aids and providing diagnostics; and in hospital-based rehabilitation programs conducting research and therapy for auditory disorders. She also led Universal Newborn Hearing Screening programs across several San Diego hospitals.

Currently, Dr. Fabian is an Associate Professor of Clinical Instruction at Northwestern University, where she teaches in the Doctor of Audiology program and chairs a committee on the Faculty Senate. She continues to see patients at Synapse Advanced Audiology on select Saturdays throughout the year.

Through both teaching and clinical care, Dr. Fabian aims to unify her expertise and passion to broaden the impact of audiology—especially in early identification and management of auditory disorders. She values Synapse Audiology’s commitment to integrating clinicians’ specialties and strengths into a collaborative, evidence-based practice that serves the complex hearing needs of children and adults alike.

“My experiences with Drs. Fabian and Johns were exceptional. The testing methods they employ are far more comprehensive and discerning than any hearing testing I have undergone in the past. The results have been spectacular for me. With Dr. Fabian, I underwent 3 hours of intensive taxing testing to assess my hearing and CAPD. The next day, I underwent an additional hour of testing and a demonstration of hearing aids. That testing confirmed my belief that I had been receiving NO benefit from the aids I had been wearing for 10 years, It also showed me clearly how much I could benefit from the hearing aids Dr. Johns was recommending. Wow!! I can hear birds singing again, hear concert music and public speakers clearly, and understand the actors in Shakespearean plays. Best of all, I no longer need to ask my wife to repeat everything she says. The subsequent follow-up appointments were very helpful in adjusting the programs in my new aids and helping me become competent in their use and their interaction with my smart phone. I am a very grateful, happy, hearing camper!”

“Dr. Julie Johns has "walked the walk" as a person who actually wears hearing aids. The office is extraordinarily well managed. Dr. Johns is exceptionally capable, compassionate and most pleasant to work with. ”
